In a field that included US Amateur finalist Albane Valenzuela and a number of past US Curtis Cup players, Olivia Mehaffey (RCDL) finished best of the bunch at the Bruin Wave Invitational played at San Luis Obispo Country Club yesterday.

The Arizona State University (ASU) Junior had a mediocre start, a first round 76, but rallied to finish with rounds of 71 and 73 to secure a one shot victory over Petra Salko of Oregon.

In February 2018, at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, Mehaffey earned co-medallist honours marking her first collegiate win however this week’s result is her first outright victory which also resulted in a top-3 finish for the ASU team.

Mehaffey isn’t the only Irish player making an impression recently on the US College circuit. Her win comes just one week after Julie McCarthy (Forrest Little) recorded her best result since beginning her studies at Auburn in August 2017. Difficult conditions hampered play at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Intercollegiate but McCarthy carded scores of 76, 69 and 72 to finish in 3rd place, one shot short of victory.
