Balmoral are  keen to attract a new generation of players to the club, particularly those who are retiring from other sports such as camogie, football or hockey. They especially want to attract women who have never played any sport before but want to give golf a go.

The response to Balmoral’s advertising of the scheme has been unbelievable. They have received over 2,000 hits on their give golf a go Facebook page along with hundreds of emails and texts from ladies’ wanting to sign up. Balmoral have now enrolled over 70 women in the scheme and have established a waiting list for the next phase of potential women golfers.

Lady Captain Geraldine is delighted with the response “ there is definitely an interest out there from women wanting to take up a sport which is not too physically demanding, can cater for all abilities and has an emphasis on the social side where they can meet like minded people and have a bit of fun”.

Professional Lee McKenna assisted by some of the low handicap men provide coaching beginning posture, grip, following with  lessons on pitching, putting and chipping. DSC_0110

Many of the lady members have signed up to act as mentors, they help with coaching and take the ladies’ out on the course. DSC_0123

Lady Captain Geraldine Bradley  praised all involved in the project “A lot of time and hard work has gone into organising and running  Give Golf A Go”  Bernie Mc Nally project manager, the ladies committee, mentors, golf professional Lee and his team have done an amazing job.  All the women taking part are really loving the course and are already getting a taste of the social side of golf. Not even bad weather has put them off attending coaching nights”. DSC_0119
