Sean Dunne (9) from Scoil Padraig NBS, in Clane and Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Golf Ambassador, Des Smyth are pictured with the famous Claret Jug and Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Trophy . Sean was one of the winners of the inaugural Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Trophy Tour competition which gave four lucky schools across the island of Ireland an historic opportunity to host a visit not only from the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Trophy but also the world famous ‘Claret Jug’. The competition invited children between the ages of 9 and 15 to tell The European Tour why their class or school deserved a visit from these two prestigious trophies. Sean Dunne wrote a fantastic letter to the Tour and talked about how golf helped him overcome his coordination difficulties, following hearing problems as a younger child. Antonia Beggs, Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Tournament Director and Pro Golfer, Des Smyth brought the two famous trophies with them and hosted a Q &A session with pupils from the Scoil Padraig NBS. Des is an eight-time winner on the European Tour, vice-captain of Europe’s victorious 2006 and 2014 Ryder Cup teams, and twice a member of the Ryder Cup playing team in 1979 and 1981. He gave the students a great insight into his life as pro golfer and spoke about the importance of young people in the game and how Rory McIlroy has been a wonderful inspiration for so many people around the world. As a result of Sean’s winning letter his school will also receive tickets for the winners’ class to go to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro Am event. The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation will be held at Royal County Down, Newcastle, Co. Down from the 28-31st May.
